"Groovy" Cannabis-Patchouli Soap
Tuesday September 9, 2014
Today was all about our latest experiment, mixing two FO's (fragrance oils) together resulting in a Soap Lily original scent. We may call this one "Cannabis-Patchouli" but we might just call it "Groovy". Now we know you are snickering, and we don't blame you. We snickered too. Who knew the cannabis flower had such a lovely scent?
We bought the scent called Cannabis Flower from www.fragrancebuddy.com, who described the scent as "sweet cannabis flower fragrance (kush) smells like a strong herbal green odor." Another web site we found described it as "slightly floral, slightly spicy, but unmistakably Cannabis, this fragrance has a deep and penetrating beauty." We really like the scent, and it's not at all what you might expect it to be. Since we didn't have quite enough of the Cannabis Flower, we decided to add a little Sweet Patchouli. If this combination isn't a throwback to the 60's and 70's, what is?
The Sweet Patchouli came from +NaturesGarden. Neither Alison nor I particularly like Patchouli, but we do think this fragrance oil is wonderful. Natures Garden describes it as "an earthy blend of Patchouli and Green Grass intertwined with Fresh Lavender and hints of licorice with crisp notes of menthol softened by amber." So far we've made and sold two batches and customers are asking for more.
Here is our mixture - Cannabis Flower and Sweet Patchouli. Peace out!
Alison is carefully measuring the Sweet Patchouli into the Cannabis Flower. Remember, this is science and exact measurements are crucial.
We decided to use natural non-colored batter and mix it with pink batter, not sure why, we just felt like it. We mixed two colors from +Bramble Berry Ultramarine Pink and Fired up Fuchsia with a clear mica sparkle we bought from www.rusticescentuals.com
The finished colors mixed with a teaspoon of safflower oil looks like fresh raspberry slush.
We decided not to take pictures of each step of the hot process soap. We've made it many times and don't want to bore anyone. In a nutshell we mixed silk into our lye/water then added that into a mixture of palm, coconut, olive and Castor oils that had been melted in our crock pot. We stick blended until the mixture was at light to medium trace, scraped down the sides, covered it and let it cook in fifteen minute increments until it was done. Total time lapsed was about two hours. Once the soap was done, Alison did both the PH test strips and the zap test. Both came out fine.
We added the fragrance oil mixture into the batter. Oh baby, does it smell good!
Once the scent was thoroughly mixed into the batter, we removed about two
and a half cups of batter to use with the pink colorant.
The pink colorants mixed into the batter created this lovely color. It is almost a bubble gum pink, but thankfully it does not smell like bubble gum.
We plopped the natural color portion of the batter into the mold
and tamped down several times to eliminate air bubbles.
We plopped the pink batter onto the white and.....
Folded the two together using a spoon and a pick. Honestly, we cannot begin to describe to you how good this scent mixture is.
Here is what the soap looked like just before Alison inserted the dividers.
Making sure the dividers are firmly pressed all the way to the bottom of the mold.
And now we wait until tomorrow to see what the mixture of Cannabis Flower and Sweet Patchouli looks like.
The unveiling....as you can see the bright pink has toned down somewhat and it's turned into a nice shade of pink.
The soap is a nice blend of pink and white which is exactly what Alison was hoping for.
Here is another view of the same bar.

It will be ready in 1 - 2 weeks
